Open Day at the Laboratoire des 2 Infinis – Toulouse

On Friday October 2th, the L2IT, Laboratory of the 2 Infinities – Toulouse, is opening its doors to the public! The laboratory explores physical and astrophysical phenomena, from the infinitely small to the infinitely large.

At the scale of the Universe, we study gravitational waves produced by cataclysmic events such as the mergers of supermassive black holes.

At the microscopic scale, we study the dynamics of atomic nuclei and the most fundamental constituents of the Universe produced in high-energy particle collisions.

Come visit our stands and discover the physics of the two infinities through interactive activities and discussions with our researchers and engineers.

At our stands, you’ll be able to experience, in particular, the real-time detection of particles using a working detector – a cloud chamber physically set up on site – and a demonstration of the principle of gravitational wave detection using a Michelson interferometer set up on site. But that’s not all! Fun and educational demonstrations on data analysis for the discovery of new fundamental particles or gravitational waves, as well as innovative techniques in computing to enhance these discoveries, await you!

General-public mini-lectures (in French) are also on the programme at two different times, at 3.00 pm and 6.00 pm:

Autopsie de la matière : explorer l’infiniment petit avec le LHC
Écouter l’Univers avec les ondes gravitationnelles
Le Calcul scientifique et l’IA pour étudier les deux infinis
